“Accommodation for the 200 migrant labourers was a squalid camp in Hatherleigh made up of army tents and straw mattresses. It was, says Ralph, “very cold, because it was at the end of May…very wet, very windy conditions and the tent was very, very cold. Extremely cold.”

Eventually more hospitable barracks were built, but there were other problems. With workers from Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia, Poland and Holland, the Aussie diet was always going to cause a stir, and Ralph remembers the Italians, who made up the bulk of the camp, going on strike because they couldn’t get pasta.”
