Doctor heal thyself

I reckon they are just a bunch of dropkicks who care more for profit than peoples lives. The real shame is, this “dont care, gimme the money” attitude is in the majority for most so called “Medical Clinics”.

Hippocratic Oath

Have they have all forgotton this…

Swear to 'ALL' the Gods

“ I swear by Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods, and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfil according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:

Teach Doctors 'Sons' the Art (But no one else)

To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art–if they desire to learn it–without fee and covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken the oath according to medical law, but to no one else.

Dietry Supplements?

I will apply dietic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

Lets not kill people (or babies)

I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

Surgery for Surgeons

I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.

Treat the patient (without screwing around..)

Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.

Keep my mouth shut!

What I may see or hear in the course of treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep myself holding such things shameful to be spoken about.

Double edged sword?

If I fulfil this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.”

2007-11-28 The Medical Clinic Millicent

Emergency Appointments

Daniel told me last night that his headaches were still very bad. He asked me if I had made an appointment to see the Doctor. Over the past week, since returning from School Camp. Daniel had been complaining almost daily of having a headache. Now Daniel has always suffered a lot from headaches. I had mentioned it to Dr Burchel in Beachport the last time Daniel saw him. (About 3 months prior) But the issue wasn’t really addressed apart from advising pain killers.

You will wait to see a Doctor

So knowing how difficult it is to see a Doctor. Not really wanting to travel out of my way to Beachport. Knowing that I wasn’t to happy with Dr Burchels sensitivity towards his patients fears. I decided to try and get an appointment with a Doctor in Millicent. So I rang The Medical Clinic Millicent with some trepidation.

10 minute sessions: The rule of the day

Previously I had experienced the quality of service that the Doctors of The Medical Clinic Millicent were prepared to offer via the Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc.

You will pay a gap!

The Doctors of this particular practice have adopted this attitude. The Federal Government doesn’t pay a high base fee under Medicare. So they will charge a $15 gap fee for each visit of the Unemployed or those in receipt of any Government Pension.

Just another way John Howard kept his government in the black. By refusing the demands of the Doctors for a fair system. So eventually as Doctors were leaving the country in droves. Instead of funding Medicare properly, Mr Howard stuck a bandaid on it, and introducing legislation to allow the Doctors to charge a “GAP”. Thank goodness that mean hearted Howard is gone.

This could be an emergency! - Call back at 8.30am Tomorrow?

Anyway, knowing all this I attempted to book an appointment. I was told to call back at 8.30am on the morning of the 28th to make an emergency appointment. Because continious headaches could be an indication of a very serious condition. However, they refused to make the appointment the afternoon before. I was instructed that if I wanted a Doctor to see my son fast. I would have to call back at 8.30am on the next day.

http://lazerzap.com/graphics/doctors/medical1.jpg

So I did. I was on the phone from 8.15am. I wasted maybe 8 calls. I was trying to see if an appointment could be made before the School Bus was due. At 8.30am the school bus goes past the door. Sarah went off to School at 8.30am. But I was still wasting phone calls. At 8.35am I called the Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc wondering why no one was answering the phone at The Medical Clinic Millicent. They told me to keep trying The Medical Clinic Millicent. Obviously they were late getting in today.

Finally after more wasted calls to The Medical Clinic Millicent the message changed and a receptionist finally answered the phone.

He who hesitates is lost

I explained myself to her. She told me an appointment was available at 12.15 midday. I tried to explain that I had a prior appointment around that time. Trying to get an appointment 15 or 30 mins later. So she says sorry the 12.15 is now gone. The only other one left is 3.15pm. So I quickly agree to the 3.15pm appointment even though we will have to wait nearly all day in Millicent. Sarah will have to walk down the driveway by herself. Go to the empty farmhouse. My fears of snakebites rears its ugly head. I will be late now, getting home.

Finally: The Appointment

So 3.15pm finally rolls around. Daniel and I attend The Medical Clinic Millicent. I am asked for my Pensioner Concession Card and Daniels Medicare number. I offer the Pensioner Concession Card and my Medicare card. I explain that they will have to look up Daniel’s Medicare number because Daniel is on Barbara (X)‘s Medicare card.

Not so fast...

I am told they cannot do that any longer. New rules have been instigated. I am led to believe that Medicare no longer allows this practise. I am instructed that if I cannot produce Daniels Medicare number I will be charged $75 for the consultancy. The receptionist obviously has no idea what it’s like trying to raise two kids on low income. The receptionist delivers this message with a smug attitude.

Stunned Mullet Mode: Activated

I’m standing there with my mouth open. I can’t believe this is happening. I can’t believe the receptionist attitude. Two seconds later I burst into life. Who the hell does this woman think she is? How dare she talk down to me. I demand to speak to her supervisor. I am so angry I can barely get the word supervisor out.

By this stage the receptionist is answering a telephone call. She doesn’t even have the decency to finish up with me. I am totally worthless obviously. I get angrier. I demand that she gets her supervisor immediately. She waves me aside with a grimmace while she tries to concentrate on her telephone call. I just get angrier.

Explosive Mode: Activated

A Doctor approaches the Receptionists Desk. I inquire to the Doctor in a very load voice. “Do you run this flee bag operation?” Everyone in the waiting area can’t believe their luck. A sideshow while they are waiting. How nice for them.

Finally another lady approaches from the reception area. She has a clipboard. I demand to know what’s going on. I have never been told that they cannot lookup Medicare numbers before. This lady informs me that it was changed a couple of months back. But she will still accept Daniel as a patient. As long as I fill out this form and that I alter the tone in my voice or they will refuse to see Daniel.

Just like that.

So I shutup and start to fill out the form. But inside I am seething. So much so that I cannot control it. I go to the receptionist desk. I toss the clipboard with the form onto it. I said to them ‘I’d rather drive to Mt Gambier than stay here and be treated like a second class citizen.”

So Daniel and I leave.

Pride go'eth before a fall..

Now that I am out of there. I can think again. I realize that a trip to Mt Gambier is just too hard. But lets see. They considered it a possible emergency. Thats why I was able to get an appointment so quickly in the first place. So if it’s a possible emergency. I’m going to goto Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc. As is my right under Medicare.

http://lazerzap.com/graphics/doctors/hospital.jpg

Now I know that the same Doctors from The Medical Clinic Millicent will have to attend Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc. It occurs to me that when I drag them away from their lucrative practice at The Medical Clinic Millicent to Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc. I probably “COST” them some money. Oh dear. How sad.

Devious Laugh Mode: Activated

So I attend Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc emergency room. I am told the same thing by the staff at Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc. They are no longer “allowed” to look up Daniels Medicare number. I am cursing Mr Howard by this stage. But the way they are saying “not allowed” rings bells in my head. So I determine to contact Medicare to check this information.

Something 'Feels' Wrong

There is a payphone in the emergency department. I hit the phone. To call Dr Burchel. He has Daniels Medicare number on record. Failing that, I will ring Barbara (X). In the back of my mind is the thought of contacting Medicare to check the information I have been told too.

A second nurse comes in and takes Daniels vital signs. Blood preasure. Temperature. The Nurse leaves.

The same “Nurse” or staff member that initially informed me that they are no longer allowed to look up Medicare information, comes into the room. See’s me on the phone and asks who I am calling. I tell her Dr Burchel in Beachport to get Daniels Medicare number. She tells me not to bother. That they have Dr Burchels number. Five minutes later she is back with a piece of paper. Written on the paper is “9.30am”. She then tells me she has made an appointment to see Dr Burchel for me. At 9.30am in Beachport.

For the second time. My mouth drops open. I say to her. “So that’s it then?”

Lets try again tomorrow: Aim lower please

Well at least Daniel will finally get to see a Doctor. But now I have to make a special trip to Beachport? They have me wasting $15 in petrol. How nice of them. Without even asking me. What if I dont have the funds for a trip to Beachport? Without offering any assistance beyond that. Some emergency room. I am now at the point that I feel like. Ok. Hit me again. I’m past careing.

6 pack to celebrate!!

We leave Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc and head home to Clovelly. I break into the rent to get some extra petrol for tomorrows trip to Beachport. So I was unable to pay rent for the week. In fact I went and bought some alcohol and celebrated how far behind I am falling in the bills. (Note I Dont drink alcohol much.)

But life goes on.. Tomorrow is another day.

Lets call Medicare

When I got home it was 4.45pm. I looked up the Medicare phone number on the internet. Gave them a call. Guess what? There is no new rule. Medicare asked if I wanted the phone number for the Health Commissions Complaints line. Of course I accepted.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

So I called Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc. Guns blazing. Blat receptionist down. Blat senior nurse. Then I get transfered to a Mrs Loxton. She is a director of Millicent Hospital and Health Service Inc. She also informs me that they are no longer able to look up a Medicare number.

BLAT!

Your a Liar!

So I called her a bare faced liar. I informed her that I had just got off the phone to Medicare. I informed her that I would be making an official complaint about the way they are treating low income earners.

But: It's Not 'OUR' fault!

Mrs Loxton backpedals and says that the “Doctors” have made this rule. Not the hospital. I tell Mrs Loxton that the Doctors may have made “their” rules. But the Hospital didn’t have to approve it and instruct their staff to “bend the truth” to accomodate these “Doctors”.

Conclusion

Nothing. Dropped there. Nothing changed. No report lodged.
