My Grandfather James Beattie was a Coal miner in Scotland.
In 1924/25 when he and his family emigrated to Australia.
He naturally chose Wonthaggi to be his new home.

Wonthaggi is a small town in Gippsland, Victoria.
It was built to provide manpower to the Victorian Governments
State owned and operated Coal mine.
He toiled long and hard to provide for his family.
Under working and safety conditions it would be hard to believe today.
During the years the Wonthaggi mine operated, 1909-1968.
Eighty five men were killed in total.

State operated Wonthaggi Coal Mine Plans

Two major disasters occured in the State Coal mine, both in No. 20 Shaft.
Both due to the ingition of methane gas.
The first in 1931 killed 4. The second in 1937 killed 13.

I know very little about my Conron side of the family.
My Grandfather was a farmer in Buffalo in Gipsland, Victoria. Australia.

I have no idea where he originated from.
I know we had relations in or around Essendon (A Melbourne suburb).

My Father and his Sister were born on the farm in Buffalo.
The farm was at the end of Conron's Road.

(The road's name remains the same name in the year 2001)
Sometime prior to my birth.. Aprox 1950.
Grandfather sold the farm and moved (back?) to the smoke.
He purchased a fair amount of land in Dandenong North.

Over the years the land was sold off.
Grandfather and Grandmother retained 81a Cleeland Street, Dandenong.
Around 1957, My Parents owned 81b Cleeland Street for some time.
